New team member - Juman Hamza
Hello!
Hi everyone, Juman here, the newest member of the CMI team! I'm a Medical Illustrator and Multimedia Designer working at NMS’ Edinburgh branch with Emily.
I come from an anatomy / graphic design background with some 2D animation and 3D modelling thrown in for good measure.
The early years
After discovering a love for graphic design through Photoshop circa 2007 on school computers, I started making logos and posters - sometimes for a fiver, mostly for freesies.
However my fear of being a jobless artiste and love of practical tangible things led me away from design and toward science. So I went on to study Forensic Anthropology at Dundee then a MSc at UCL but continued building my design skills and freelancing.
Grad school & work
After graduating I had the classic crisis about what exactly I wanted to dedicate my life to. Having come short, I realised that the 2 things I loved most in the world (sorry mama) were science and design.
Enter stage door left: Glasgow Uni's Medical Visualisation course. After learning a cool combo of 3D modelling and game design, I went on to bag an internship at 3D4Medical then a Design role at Bold Health, a fresh new startup in London.
Having followed NMS since my uni days, I peeped that they were hiring and just had to apply. Luckily they said yes.
My first project
The assignment was to create an illustration for Mometrix showing where a chest tube should be inserted. Cue - reclining sexy man with accurate rib placement.
My second project
I also created, for Mometrix, this illustration that shows how the lungs react to pneumonia. The many structures involved in the process were great fun to research and learn about.
Looking forward
Since starting at NMS, I've felt like both sides of my brain have been fully activated. One of the most enjoyable parts of being a medical illustrator here is the focus on anatomical and medical accuracy. There's not only beauty, but substance (and science) too.
The role has countless facets, from understanding exactly where the ribs begin and end in the thorax, to creating UX friendly website wireframes. There's never a dull moment.
I'm really looking forward to working on many more exciting projects and being part of the company's growth, as well as sharing some sweet sweet imagery on my Instagram page.
