An interview with medical illustrator Annie Campbell
Hello Friends!
Annie here, I’m one of the Directors of Now Medical Studios (if you’re reading this, you should also go check out our other Director’s profile, Emily Holden). I’m thrilled to be part of an amazing and talented team of medical illustrators. I thought I’d share a little bit about myself so that you can get an insight into who I am and where I’ve come from.
Where did you go to school?
I ended up in the medical illustration and animation industry through an indirect route. When I went to Uni I had no idea this field existed! I did my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the University of Glasgow but soon realized that I wasn’t very good at the subject. To top that off I had no idea how to carve a career out of this degree.
A friend suggested I look into medical illustration and everything fell into place as I embarked on this career path. I studied Biomedical Visualization at UIC in Chicago and had a fantastic time there—met many talented medical illustrators.
Where did you work?
My experiences at the graduate program opened up a lot of opportunities for me to learn more about the field and it resulted in me interning at the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), after that, I landed my first job as a medical illustrator at a studio in New York.
Over the past ten years, I’ve worked for various companies and Universities as a medical illustrator and I’m ever so grateful for all of these experiences.
When did you become a freelance medical illustrator?
I took the leap to become a full time freelance medical illustrator in 2016, that’s when Campbell Medical Illustration started. My experience working for other companies really helped me building my freelance business.
When did Now Medical Studios start?
To be very honest with you, I always thought that I would be a company of one but soon realised that it takes a team of people to produce great things—that’s when Susie was hired (you can read more about Susie here).
In the background I was always found collaborating with Emily on passion projects, these passion projects eventually led to us forming our educational learning channel, Learn Medical Art, as well as our company merger to become what Now Medical Studios is today.
I’m so proud of everyone in the team and honoured to be working with such an amazing partner like Emily. I can wait for what the future holds for us as we grow together.
Thanks to the medical illustration community for being so welcoming to us all—it’s meant a lot to have your support.
